INTRODUCING RAPUNZEL

NO, IT IS NOT A DISNEY PRINCESS RAPUNZEL, ALTHOUGH  SHE MIGHT HAVE GOTTEN HER NAME AFTER THIS PLANT

Now when I think about it, even though I love to eat and enjoy food, my lunch plate used to be quite boring. It would be meat or fish and potatoes, maybe some salad if someone makes me eat it. Once when I made that decision that I will try to change my eating habits and pay more attention to what I eat for my meals, I can tell you that my lunch plate became so much more fun and colorful and I am enjoying my meals more than I have ever done before.

DID YOU KNOW: MACHE IS ALSO KNOWN AS: LAMB’S LETTUCE, CORN SALAD, NUT LETTUCE…AND…JUST WAIT FOR IT: RAPUNZEL SALAD!!!.

At the very beginning, after I came home form the ship, I was with my sister Mima in Lidl store, that just have opened in my city. Mima pointed out that I should try Mâche or Corn Salad (it has very funny name in my language – Matovilac), as she finds it very tasty and delicious. I have never tried that one before (or if I did, I wasn’t aware of it, probably you did to and maybe didn’t even know that it was there in your mixed greens package) and since now I was quite open to trying new things I decided to go for it. She told me that she makes a simple salad with it, with a bit of oil and vinegar or lemon. Ok, I can do that.

Soon enough I fell in love with this plant and it became one of the most frequent green vegetables in my cuisine.

The reason why I fell in love with this type of greens, is because it actually has a taste. Unlike ordinary lettuce that, if not seasoned, I find tasteless and bland, Mâche Salad I can eat plain, without any seasoning. I discovered that it goes very nicely with my other two favorites greens: Arugula and Baby Spinach. So now I don’t even take lettuce, unless it is already in a pre-packed mixed greens package.

DID YOU KNOW?  MACHE SALAD HAS THREE TIMES MORE VITAMIN C THAN THE LETTUCE

Mâche is a leafy plant, it has mild but delicious taste (unlike bitter arugula) and has only 23 kcal/96kJ (100g) and 3 times more vitamin C than the lettuce. Writing this text I also discovered that it is rich with potassium, magnesium, calcium and vitamin B6. This can be a very good addition to your diet and your minerals and vitamins daily intake. Mâche is very popular in Europe, especially France, where it is a frequent guest in different salads and meals. It is very pretty with its small velvety leafs so you can use it to nicely decorate your food as well. Mâche Salad leaves are very delicate and you should eat it as soon as you buy it as it whiter fast, although you can keep it for a few days in a dry, closed container in your fridge. I usually make my own mixed greens packages so I always have some of Mâche Salad in my fridge.

IT IS SO EASY TO MAKE MACHE SALAD WHEN YOU ARE ON THE GO

Salmon, Avocado, Cherry Tomatoes and a bit of Rapunzel Salad for a healthy meal
It is delicious and looks great on your plate

You can have various combinations with Mache. The most common is with boiled eggs and bacon, however you can try all different combinations that may suit better your diet plan and taste buds. Sometimes I use Mache Salad as a snack in between meals, as I simply love its delicate taste. My all time favorite is Rapunzel Chicken Salad. It is light, but filling and it is great when you need to take your meal with you as you can eat it anywhere. Another one that I love is Rapunzel Tuna Salad  – this one is my go to meal when I didn’t bring my lunch or dinner with me and I need something to eat, as I can buy all the ingredients in the nearest store and make it on the spot. Sometimes when I visit friends I come with bag of goodies and right after saying hello I ask for a salad bowl to fix my meal.

If you haven’t tried Mache Salad yet, maybe it is time to do so. She might not be a Disney Princess, but she is definitely princess among green salads with her delicate leaves and sweet, mild taste.
